Tuna Sashimi and Drinks with Friends in Bangi-dong, Seoul
A Korean-American guest living in the United States recently visited Goldtuna Bangi-dong during a trip to Seoul with an American friend.
Instead of a standard table, the two chose to sit side-by-side at the "dajji" (chef's counter seating), which connects directly to the kitchen.
They enjoyed their dinner while watching the intricate process of the chef preparing the tuna and plating each dish.
The true charm of the counter seat lies in the close distance between the chef and the guest.
A Special Seoul Dinner: Introducing Tuna Omakase to an American Friend
Our Korean-American guest was touring Seoul with his American friend.
While Seoul offers countless culinary delights, they chose a premium tuna course for this special evening. Sitting at the counter, they listened to the head chef’s explanations as they savored the meal.
There are many ways to experience Korean food culture. A structured course—starting with fresh tuna sashimi and sushi, followed by grilled dishes, tempura, and a final meal—is one of the most sophisticated ways to enjoy a night out in Seoul.
The Benefits of Choosing the 'Dajji' Counter Seat
The "dajji" refers to the seating where you face the kitchen directly while dining.
From here, you can watch the tuna being sliced and receive immediate explanations about different cuts like otoro (fatty belly) or akami (lean red meat). It also allows the chef to monitor your eating pace and serve the next dish at the perfect moment.
Sitting side-by-side makes it easier to share reactions to the food and enjoy a more intimate conversation compared to sitting across a large table.
Why the Chef Said he Served Them "Extra Well"
After the meal, the head chef mentioned to the pair that he had taken extra care in serving them that night.
While our standards for quality are high for every guest, food prepared by hand often reflects the energy of the conversation and the connection made during the service.
There is an old Korean saying from the butcher shops: "The meat served to Mr. Kim is different from the meat served to that Kim fellow." It’s not about changing the objective quality, but rather the human tendency to give a little more heart to someone you've shared a friendly face-to-face conversation with.
At the counter, the chef and guest face each other directly. The chef explains each cut and observes the guest's reaction to prepare the next piece. That close communication added a special layer to their meal.
A Memorable Scene from a Seoul Adventure
We want to express our gratitude to the two guests who visited us all the way from America.
We hope you have a wonderful remainder of your trip and take many happy memories of Seoul home with you. May this dinner remain a cherished memory in your long friendship.
